Late August Announcements

*

*Davis Bike Loop: repainting the pavement markings*
Since the green "Davis Bike Loop" stencil markings were painted in 2007,
markings have faded and require periodic repainting to enable cyclists to
find their way around the loop. DB! has lobbied the city, specifically
Public Works staff and the city council, to make repainting the loop
markings a priority. We have received feedback from the city council that
repainting the loop markings is getting serious consideration. DB! plans to
bring this issue to the council's attention again at their Sept. 7 meeting.

*Serve on the Davis Bicycle Advisory Commission! Applications due September
1st*
The BAC <http://cityofdavis.org/meetings/agenda.cfm?c=29> is now accepting
applications for a new commission members. This is a great opportunity to
help improve bicycle infrastructure and culture in Davis. Download

*Last month's Clips of Faith festival*
DB! and the Davis Bike Collective would like to thank everyone who helped to
make the Davis Clips of Faith the biggest and best stop on its summer tour!
We had more than 1500 attendees, we sold 160 gallons of beer, and parked
over 100 bicycles, exceeding our projections. The event was a fundraiser for
both of our groups, earning about $2200 for each, to help keep Davis the
great bicycling town that it is. So thank you all so very much, we couldn't
have done it without you.*

*No on Prop. 23*
Davis Bicycles! is urging its members to vote No on Prop. 23 on November's
ballot. Prop 23 would gut the California Climate Action Bill (AB32) by
prohibiting its implementation until unemployment falls to 5.5 percent. If
it passed it would wreck California's efforts to date to reduce CO2
emissions. It would impact funding for bicycle improvements and programs to
increase awareness of the bicycle as a key tool in fighting climate
change. More

*Congratulations, Joe!*
DB! wants to congratulate Joe Krovoza on his election to the Davis City
Council on June 8. Because Joe received the most votes of all the
candidates, Joe is now Mayor Pro-Tem. Joe is a founding member of DB! and
has helped to raise awareness about our biking culture by coordinating
our bi-weekly
column <http://www.bikedavis.info/?cat=38> in the *Davis Enterprise* on
bike-related issues in Davis, and by organizing the DB! Film Festival.
Congratulations, Joe and thanks for your dedicated service. As Joe moves
on to provide citywide leadership on biking and many other important issues,
we have an *immediate* need to find volunteer(s) to replace Joe in
coordinating the bike column and the film festival. Please reply to this
message if you are interested in exploring the possibility of taking on this
responsibility. Thanks in advance!

*Bike To School! and Saveagallon*

The Davis Bicycles! School Committee will once again sponsor the Saveagallon
contest for DJUSD students. Students log their alternative transportation
miles on saveagallon.org with the chance to win monthly prizes. More
information will be sent out through the schools and in the September
announcement.

The DB! School Committee needs school representatives and Saveagallon
contest volunteers for the following schools: Patwin, Willett, Korematsu and
Marguerite Montgomery Elementary Schools. E-mail Christal
Waters<chrystal2waters at yahoo.com>to find out more about what is
involved. Volunteer time for these positions
can vary between 1 and 6 hours per month. DB! will be assisting schools in
putting on bike rodeos. If your school would like a rodeo, please ask the
school administration to e-mail Christal Waters
<chrystal2waters at yahoo.com>or Jim
Watson <jwatson at omsoft.com>.

Davis Bicycles! will be urging DJUSD and City to initiate an official Safe
Routes to Schools <http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/> program, starting with a
parent survey and in-classroom tally of student transportation modes. We
hope to get this request before a joint city and district “2 by 2” meeting
on Thursday, September 16. If you are interested in helping to start or
promoting an official Safe Routes to Schools program in Davis, please
contact Christal Waters <chrystal2waters at yahoo.com>.
