*Acclaimed Bicycle Author Visits Davis for a Book Signing*
Acclaimed bicycle author David Herlihy will be in Davis on
Friday, July 23rd to give a special presentation at the U.S. Bicycling Hall
of Fame. Herlihy’s latest book, *The Lost Cyclist: **The Epic Tale of an
American Adventurer and His Mysterious Disappearance*, has just been
published and he will give a slideshow presentation of
never-before-seen-by-the-public images relating to the book. Following the
presentation, Herlihy will autograph books and the Avid Reader bookstore
will have his books available at the Hall of Fame for purchase.
The presentation and book signing will run from 5:30 to 7:00 pm inside the
U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, at 303 3rd Street in Central Park at the corner
of 3rd and B Streets in downtown Davis. This rare opportunity to meet
author David Herlihy and see his presentation will be free for U.S.
Bicycling Hall of Fame members and just $5.00 regular admission to the Hall
of Fame for other visitors. *The Lost Cyclist* will be available for
purchase following the presentation, as well as his well-known book, *The
Bicycle: A History*. The author will be available to sign his books that are
purchased that evening.
Since space is limited for this event, those who wish to reserve a ticket to
the David Herlihy event can visit the Avid Reader bookstore in downtown
Davis at 617 2nd Street. The local independent bookstore is open seven days
a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The phone number is (530) 758-4040.
*The Lost Cyclist* is an epic, non-fiction adventure about a
young man named Frank Lenz. Lenz left his home in Pittsburgh, in the spring
of 1892, to cycle around the world on a new-fangled “pneumatic safety
bicycle” (the prototype of the modern bicycle). Two years into his journey
and nearing the final leg of his adventure, Lenz mysteriously disappeared in
eastern Turkey. An international outcry erupted and another
larger-than-life cyclist, William Sachtleben, set out to uncover the mystery
of Lenz’s disappearance. The book is said to capture the soaring joys and
constant dangers accompanying a bicycle adventurer in the days before paved
roads and automobiles.
In his Davis presentation, Herlihy plans a digital slideshow of
many Frank Lenz pictures from before and during his world bicycle tour
through countries such as the United States, Japan, China, Burma, India and
Persia. Most of the photos Herlihy has gathered for this slide presentation
have never before been published, and have come from private sources who
have allowed Herlihy the right to use the images from the Frank Lenz
archives.
Because Herlihy lives in Massachusetts, he rarely makes west
coast appearances. This will be Herlihy’s first visit to Davis since it
became the new home of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame. David Herlihy’s work
has been featured on National Public Radio and Voice of America and in the
New York Times, the Boston Globe, Boston, and Historic Preservation. In 1999
Herlihy received the McNair History Award from the Wheelmen, the preeminent
American association of antique bicycle collectors.
Following the Herlihy presentation and book signing on July 23,
the “Clips of Faith Beer and Film Tour” will be presented next to the Hall
of Fame at 7:30 pm in Central Park. A wide variety of hand made beers from
New Belgium Brewing will be on sale to benefit Davis Bicycles!, a local
bicycle advocacy group. A free program of short films incorporating the
themes of whimsy and sustainability will be shown on an outdoor screen in
the park beginning at dusk.
The U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame opened in Davis on April 24, 2010. The Hall
of Fame features memorabilia and stories that illustrate the spirit and
history of cycling and cyclists in the United States. It’s also a museum
with a historic collection of bicycles dating back to the invention of
cycling. The Hall is open during the Davis Farmers Market on Wednesdays
(from 4 to 8 p.m.) and Saturdays (from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). For membership or
special event information, visit: www.usbhof.org or call (530) 341-FAME.
