*January Bike Announcements
*

Greetings and happy bicycle new years!

*January Membership Meeting*
Davis Bicycles! will be having its first membership meeting of the year in
the last week of January. We will discuss what we hope to accomplish this
year, and have a couple of thought provoking bike related presentations.
Look for an upcoming announcement with details on the date and time.

*Davis Bicycles! Board Nominations*
Now that we are an official California corporation we are soliciting
nominations for our first board of directors. If you or someone you know is
interested in helping guide Davis Bicycles! to making bicycling better in
Davis, send your nomination to Leo Rainer at leo at davisbicyles.org.

*Back to School / Bike to School*
The Davis Bicycles! / Saveagallon citywide student bike to school
competition is going strong. Since it began in October, students have logged
a total of over *33,000 miles* and saved the equivalent of 1,600 gallons of
gasoline and 16 tons of CO2. For more information about the contest contact
Christal Waters at chrystal2waters at yahoo.com

*Sunday, April 25th*
Cycling enthusiasts and fans are invited to participate in the Breakaway
Ride <http://www.breakawayride.com/>, a riding event held in conjunction
with the upcoming 2010 Amgen Tour of California. It will give cycling
enthusiasts the opportunity to ride the actual route of the 2010 Amgen Tour
of California. Three distances will be offered to accommodate various skill
levels; the longest distance covers the same route that the pros will ride
(from Davis to Santa Rosa). Riders will be chip timed and supported, with a
maximum of 3,500 riders.

*Monday, May 17th*
The Tour of California <http://www.amgentourofcalifornia.com/> returns to
Davis as the start of stage 2. City of Davis Tour of California T-shirts are
now available at the B&L Bike
Shop<http://blbikeshop.com/product/2010-tour-of-california-t-shirt-8550.htm>.
All proceeds go to the city to help bring the Tour of California to Davis.

*Saturday, May 22nd
*
Davis Bicycles! is helping to organize the *Tour de Cluck*, a bicycle tour
of chicken coops throughout Davis. This will be a very fun event and a
fundraiser for the Farm to School
Connection<http://www.davisfarmtoschool.org/>.
But we need guides to help show people the best routes to ride between
coops. If you would like to help please contact Maria Tebbutt at
funmaria at sbcglobal.net (no chicken expertise necessary).

*And a few bike links for this month:
*
Davis was number one on a SF Chronicle list of 5 places for bike lovers to
gear up<http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/01/03/TRVM1B7QMP.DTL>.
An admittedly odd list though - why pizza in Sac, but no American River bike
trail?

Last month I discussed on-street bike
parking<http://bikeportland.org/2006/11/30/more-on-street-bike-parking-comes-to-north-portland/>.
The Acutal Cafe in Oakland has done things one better and offers indoor bike
parking<http://bayarea.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/22/the-bike-is-the-star-at-this-cafe/>
.

Hundreds of Californians were at the climate change conference in Copenhagen
last month, including locals Dan Sperling and Anthony Eggert. Read about
their cycling experiences around Compenhagen in the LA
Times<http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-climate-california16-2009dec16,0,3765536.story>and
Anthony's
blog <http://centerforclimateaction.org/cop15/blog/single/46>. Mikael
Colville-Andersen talks more about Copenhagen's bike facilities
here<http://www.streetfilms.org/copenhagen%E2%80%99s-climate-friendly-bike-friendly-streets/>
.

And Copenhagen seems to be everywhere these days. Here's an interesting
electric bike concept called the Copenhagen
Wheel<http://senseable.mit.edu/copenhagenwheel/index.html>
.

Davis created the first bike lanes in the United States over 40 years ago.
The UK's first cycle lane opened 75 years
ago<http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/green-living-blog/2009/dec/14/cycling-ethical-living>,
but the same debates about integrated versus separated bicycle facilities
rage on. One option which has benefits for everyone is the Bike
Boulevard<http://dc.streetsblog.org/2009/10/14/marketing-bike-boulevards-to-non-bikers/>.

So you think you are a powerful cyclist? This
clip<http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8394055.stm>from the
BBC puts your energy output in perspective when it asks, "can 80
cyclists power a house for a day?"

Feeling like it's hard to ride your bike in the winter? Be glad you don't
have to commute in
Wisconsin<http://www.flickr.com/photos/mababo/sets/72157603589703046/>
.

Enjoy the Ride...
