*2009 Film Festival
*This year's film festival was a great success: we watched 22 fun and
informative short films, raised over $2000 for the Steve Larsen bike parking
area, and had a great time. Thanks to everyone who attended and to everyone
who volunteered to make the event go so well! But it's never too early to be
thinking about next year - we would love to have more local, thought
provoking bike films.
*On-street Bike Parking*
There are many different types of bike
racks<http://daviswiki.org/Bicycle_Parking>in Davis, but one solution
that shows a lot of promise is on-street bike
parking. On-street bike parking provides significant benefits to more than
just bicyclists. By replacing a car parking space with up to eight bike
racks, the added visibility from the street provides better exposure to the
businesses behind the space and results in increased safety for pedestrians
crossing at adjacent crosswalks. It also creates a better environment for
those on the sidewalk because there is no longer a car idling at the curb
and bikes are no longer parked along the sidewalk. Many cities, including
Portland<http://bikeportland.org/2006/11/30/more-on-street-bike-parking-comes-to-north-portland/>(and
Portland<http://bikeportland.org/2007/07/26/diy-on-street-bike-parking-in-nopo/>...
and Portland<http://bikeportland.org/2007/10/15/more-on-street-parking-comes-to-mississippi/>)
and Vancouver<http://bikeportland.org/2009/10/06/on-street-bike-parking-coming-to-downtown-vancouver/>have
been experimenting successfully with this concept. Davis has one
nice example<http://daviswiki.org/Fuji_Chef?action=Files&do=view&target=Fuji_Chef.jpg>,
but is looking to install more. Do you like this idea and think it would
help improve downtown? Let your local businesses and DB! know.
*Back to School / Bike to School**
City-wide Student Bike to School Competition*: Save a gallon of gas and win
a prize! Walk, bike, skateboard, carpool with another student, or otherwise
avoid getting into the car and enter a year-long contest to win prizes
ranging from jamba juice to an Ipod Nano. Prizes are awarded monthly through
May 2010. Students can register wtih the Davis Schools team at
saveagallon.org. Elementary school students register under their school and
classroom. Secondary students register under their school. We still need
parent or teacher volunteers to fully implement the contest at Korematsu,
Patwin and Pioneer Elementary and at Davinci and King High Schools. To
volunteer, please contact Christal Waters at chrystal2waters at yahoo.com.
*Healthy Eating and Active Living*
On September 8, 2009, Davis became the third California City to adopt a
Healthy Eating and Active Living Resolution. The resolution commits Davis
to pursue land use and policy decisions that support healthful personal
nutrition and physical activity choices. The city will be considering
nutritional standards for food offered at city events and facilities, and
will be working with local businesses to provide and highlight their own
healthful choices. For more information and to help plan the next steps,
visit the Facebook <http://apps.facebook.com/causes/355670> page or

Wright <Francesca.wright at gmail.com> or Ellen Seeley <eeseeley at ucdavis.edu>.
