A note from Tara Goddard (City bike/ped coordinator) regarding the recent
resurfacing of City streets:
Hi all - City staff (including me) have been receiving a lot of questions
from cyclists about the new road surfaces around town. In an attempt to
answer everyone at once, I wanted to share the following:
Many people have been asking about the new surface on 8th Street between L
and Poleline. Yes, this is the finished product. A slurry seal is intended
to rejuvenate the oils in the asphalt and also provide some wear surface and
skid resistance with the 1/4" aggregate. This treatment is used to prolong
the life of the asphalt and postpone costly overlay or reconstruction costs.
Anderson Road and some of the other arterials received an "asphalt overlay"
which is a rehabilitation treatment because these arterials were in much
worse condition, so funding was prioritized to improve them as much as
possible. The slurry seal represents a significant cost savings over a full
overlay, and the City doesn't have money for overlays everywhere, and so
without the slurry seal, we would be unable to make any improvements on 8th.
Even with the slightly rough slurry seal, we hope that it is an improvement
over the cracks and potholes that were out there.
Thanks,
