Davis Bicycles Announcements announce at lists.davisbicycles.org
Tue Oct 6 18:35:51 PDT 2009

The weather has finally cooled off, but that doesn't mean that bicycle
activities have. Lots of great stuff coming up in October.

*Film Festival 2009*
Plan now to enjoy Saturday, Oct. 24th from 7:00 to 10:00 pm with Davis
Bicycles! at the DB! Film Festival 2009. We have great local content and
films from around the country and globe. They are funny, diverse, inspiring
and informative, and all are family-friendly. We are downright giddy about
this year’s entries. We’ll have a raffle too and discounted bike things and
munchies for sale. We’ll be in the Brunelle Theater/IPAB of DHS. All DB!FF
2009 proceeds will support the *Steve Larsen Memorial Bike Parking* area at
the entrance to the new DHS stadium.

Here’s what we need from our friends and followers:
*

   - Mark your calendar for October 24th and plan to bring your friends.
   - Buy Tickets Now - send a short e-mail to
dbff2009 at davisbicycles.org Suggested
   donation $5-10.
   - Raffle Items Needed. Donate something new from you or a business?
It’s a great cause, and you’ll add to the fun.
   - Volunteer to help us organize and publicize the event. You guessed it,
   write to dbff2009 at davisbicycles.org.

*Back to School / Bike to School*
*One last bike rodeo*:
*Patwin Elementary* – Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1:45 p.m.
Volunteers are always appreciated. You can check students' bikes for safe
operation, help fit helmets, run the bike quiz, and assist officers on the
bike course. If you can help out please contact Christal Waters at
chrystal2waters at yahoo.com

*City-wide Student Bike to School Competition*: Save a gallon of gas and win
a prize! Walk, bike, skateboard, carpool with another student, or otherwise
avoid getting into the car and enter a year-long contest to win prizes
ranging from jamba juice to an Ipod Nano. The contest will begin October 19
and run through May 2010. Students can register through the Davis Schools
team at saveagallon.org. Elementary school students register under their
school and classroom. Secondary students register under their school. Look
for more information in the Davis Bicycles! column in the Davis Enterprise
on October 9, and in future announcements. The committee still needs parent
or teacher volunteers to fully implement the contest at Korematsu, Patwin
and Pioneer Elementary and at Davinci and King High Schools. To volunteer,
please contact Christal Waters at chrystal2waters at yahoo.com.

*43% increase in bicycle commuting nationally since 2000 *
The League of American Bicyclists reports that according to the U.S. Census
Bureau's 2008 American Community Survey (ACS), 0.55 percent of American
workers use a bicycle as their primary means of getting to work. *This is up
14 percent since 2007, 36 percent from the first ACS in 2005, and 43 percent
since the 2000 Census*. The League is analyzing the numbers for various
locations, including League Bicycle Friendly Communities. In the meantime,
you can look up this information for hundreds of communities and all of the
states using the American Fact Finder. Read more on the League of American

Help kids join the Safe Routes to School "Dear Congress" Campaign *
Deb Hubsmith of the Safe Routes to School National
Partnership<http://www.saferoutespartnership.org/>writes:
Three weeks ago, the Safe Routes to School National Partnership called on
parents, children, school officials, and community leaders to write "Dear
Congress" letters to demonstrate the importance of the Safe Routes to School
program. We're now extending the campaign deadline until Friday, October 23.
So far, we have received over 150 meaningful and powerful letters from
around the country. Now that Congress is delaying consideration of the
six-year transportation bill for several months, we have some additional
time to continue building support for Safe Routes to School. For additional
information, including ideas on what you can include in your letter, Dear
Congress Campaign <http://www.saferoutespartnership.org/national/299443>.

Enjoy the Ride...
