*November Project Meeting**
*Interested in starting a bike repair cooperative in Davis?
Want to learn about what is happening with the 5th Street corridor and how
you can provide input?
Come to the next Davis Bicycles! project meeting on *Wednesday, Nov. 19. 7-9
pm* at the Baggins End Domes Community Center, South-West Corner of Orchard
Park Dr. and Orchard Park Cr.
The first hour of the meeting, from 7 to 8pm, will be devoted to planning
for a Davis community bicycle repair cooperative. Owen Howlett with
the Sacramento
Bike Kitchen <http://sacbikekitchen.org/> and Jonathan Woolley with the Bike
Church <http://daviswiki.org/Bike_Church> will make presentations. The
Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen is an organization whose goals include providing
low-cost transportation, self-sufficiency through bicycle maintenance, and
safety through education. The Bike Church's purpose is to give the community
a low-cost resource that provides the knowledge and tools necessary to
maintain and repair their bicycles, but has recently been asked by UC Davis
Student Housing to vacate their current location on campus. A Davis bicycle
cooperative could provide a community space for bicyclists of all kinds,
train people to fix their own bikes, and provide a way to use lost and
stolen bikes for community benefit. What is your vision?
The second hour of the meeting, from 8 to 9pm, will be devoted to the 5th
Street Corridor (see http://www.ci.davis.ca.us/5thstreetcorridor/ ). We will
start with presentations from Bob Clarke with the City of Davis and Steve
Tracy with the Local Government Commission. We will review the work plan
scope the City Council approved and learn what input the City is hoping to
receive at this phase of the plan. 5th street is the main east-west street
through downtown Davis and the segment of concern is between A and L
Streets. Do you want bike lanes on this stretch of Fifth Street? What are
your safety concerns? This is an opportunity for you to find out and decide
how Davis Bicycles! should respond.
*
Express your views on the Fifth Street corridor!*
We strongly encourage Davis Bicycles! members, and as many bicyclists as
possible, to attend the following workshops and to let city officials know
your views.
The City of Davis workshops on the Fifth Street corridor:
Location: Holmes Jr. High Multi-Purpose Room (1220 Drexel Drive)
Thursday, November 20th - 6pm to 9pm
Thursday, December 4th - 6pm to 9pm
The Davis Chamber of Commerce and the Davis Downtown Business Association
are sponsoring two workshops on the Fifth Street corridor as well:
Location: DJUSD administration building, 526 B Street
Tuesday, November 18, 5 - 6:30pm, South conference room
Friday, November 21, 7:30 - 9am, East conference room
These workshops are an opportunity for bicyclists to ask for better bike
access to downtown. More customers on bikes are good for their business
also. If you shop by bike, let them know!
Last Monday on KDVS FM, Jonathan Woolley interviewed Steve Tracy, Senior
Research Consultant with the Local Government Commission, about the safety
concerns on Fifth Street, some of the history around the corridor, and his
suggested alternative for street reconfiguration.
