And, last but not least, please urge the governor to sign two bills
supporting Complete Streets and safety funding:
*AB 1358* will make California the first state to enact Complete Streets
legislation
*AB 2971* directs more federal funding to prevent bicyclist and pedestrian
fatalities
*AB 1358*: California is one step closer to becoming the first state to
enact Complete Streets legislation for all local streets and roadways. On
Friday, Aug. 28, the California Legislature approved Assembly Bill 1358, the
Complete Streets Act, and sent the bill to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for
his signature. Sponsored by the California Bicycle Coalition and AARP, AB
1358 calls for cities and counties, when updating the circulation elements
of their general plans, to ensure that local roadways are designed to
accommodate all those who use them, including bicyclists, pedestrians and
transit riders, as well as motorists.
To read more about AB 1358, and see a sample letter, see
http://calbike.org/legislation.htm#AB1538
*AB 2971*: Also on Friday, Aug. 28, the State Senate approved Assembly Bill
2971, CBC's bill to direct more federal funding to prevent bicyclist and
pedestrian fatalities. The bill now sits on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's
desk, waiting for signature. Please urge the governor to sign this bill into
law. AB 2971 would require Caltrans to establish guidance and criteria to
ensure that the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians are addressed in the
development of its safety programs by January 1, 2010.
