Sorry for the very short notice, but I only found out about this last night
and verified it this morning.

There was a very good talk/powerpoint last night by Dr. John Pucher or
Rutgers University, about bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in Europe.
He is going to give the same talk again today in Kemper Hall, at 1:30. I'm
not sure of the exact room, but I think it will be obvious.

Though Davis is very advanced in this area by U.S. standards, it's a real
eye-opener to see the amazing things they've done in Europe--and the
impressive results they've achieved. There is obviously a whole lot more
that can be done here in Davis and the U.S. I highly recommend seeing this
talk and joining in on discussions following it. Reportedly there will be
cookies--need a break?

For a peek at who Dr. Pucher is, and a couple of PDF files with similar
material, go to http://policy.rutgers.edu/faculty/pucher/ and click on the
"Presentations" tab in the middle of the page.

Davis Bicycles!

Here is the text of the promotional flier for last night's presentation. I
believe it will be the same or at least similar talk:

Cities in the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany have achieved high bike
shares of
travel by making bicycling a safe and feasible means of transport for
everyone:
women as well as men, all age groups, all skill levels, and all income
classes. In his
talk, Professor Pucher describes the approach used in these three countries
to promote
cycling for everyone and for all trip purposes. He focuses on six categories
of policies
and programs: extensive systems of separate cycling facilities, intersection
modifications and priority bicycle traffic signals, traffic calming of
neighborhoods,
safe and convenient bike parking, coordination and integration of cycling
with public
transport, traffic education and training for both cyclists and motorists,
and traffic
laws that favor cyclists and pedestrians. Precisely because the policies are
sensitive to
the different needs of different social groups, they also succeed in making
cycling
possible for virtually everyone. Professor Pucher will share ideas about how
Davis
can benefit from these policy lessons.
