Davis Bicycles! February General Meeting
Davis Lutheran Church (8th and B), 7 - 8:30 PM. Thurs Feb 21
It's been a year since I presented my research at the Varsity Theater and launched a broad discussion about what could be done to create a resurgence of bicycling among Davisites. Our organization Davis Bicycles! has done a fine job of advocating for positive change and optimism for the future of bicycling in Davis.
Thursday night we'll take a look at what we're accomplished in the last year, and where we can go from here.
I'll do a 20 min presentation on our successes, how they compare to successes in the past, and what we can expect to achieve in the next couple years, with strategic ideas on how we can achieve it--getting past engineering and political barriers. Then we'll have an open discussion and brainstorming session to see what ideas we can put together for the future, and how we can involve more people in making things happen. If you've had ideas about programs, ideas, or projects you want to see in Davis, bring them to the meeting and talk with like minded people. Then you'll be well situated to help make our common dreams a reality.
Ice Cream and other refreshments.
Ted Buehler
President, Davis Bicycles!
2 other notes:
- I'm moving to the Portland OR area for a year or two, I've finished my Masters at UCD and need to take in some fresh horizons. So I'm stepping down as President of Davis Bicycles! effective this month -- thanks for all the support -- we're starting to get the town turned around -- there's lots more to do, DB! needs more involved people. Meanwhile, keep up the good work, everyone, don't settle for anything less than your wildest dreams for Davis, Bicycle Capital of America.
- I'll be giving my "50 Years of Bicycling in Davis" presentation again, immediately before Thursday's meeting (6PM, same location. If you missed it at The Varsity Theater last Feb, come see it this Thursday. Invite your friends, neighbors and favorite elected officials. 20 min discussion/Q/A to follow. (I've given it 7 times now, to a total audience of about 600 people)
**********
To recap, in the last year we've:
* created a functional, effective bicycle advocacy organization for Davis
* developed a good rapport with city council and Davis Public Works
* gotten frequent and positive coverage in local papers
* put together a "Citizens' Davis Bike Plan" to help speed the city along
* provided regular public support at the Bicycle Advisory Commission meetings
* successfully encouraged the city to freshen up our bike facilities for the Sept conference
* got the Davis Bike Loop marked
* hosted a great "Bike Lane Pioneer Forum" in September
* received great input from citizens on what they like, what they don't and what they'd improve at our Farmers Market booth
* compiled a request list of 100 "fixes" for the city and presented it with warm acknowledgement from council (and hopefully some action)
* gave Yolo County direction and support for improving bicycle facilities after the tragic death of Willie Lopez on Oct 18
* hosted a series of successful General Meetings to discuss bike issues, celebrate bicycling, etc.
Good work, folks!
