After over a year of work, the city has a Comprehensive Bicycle Plan ready for review.
New Bike/Ped Coordinato Tara Goddard has hit the ground running, and has compiled all the previous work into what looks to be a pretty good end product.
Tonight, you can come and give your input. It will be reviewed at the Bicycle Advisory Commission meeting tonight, 7PM, Veterans Center (14th and B). 7:15 - 8:30. Come if you can, express support for everything you like, make suggestions to add or change things that you think should be added, changed or strengthened.
It's been a long haul, but we finally have something on paper, put together by the city, come and see it if you can, speak in favor of its strong points.
Agenda at http://www.city.davis.ca.us/meetings/agenda.cfm?c=29 (Hopefully the plan itself will appear on the web page before the 7PM meeting)
Come speak your mind, show your support for ambitious bicycle improvements in your town!

--Tara presented a summary to the Davis Bike Club meeting last Wednesday, and we hope to schedule her to present it at a Davis Bicycles! meeting soon. (Like maybe a general meeting on Jan 28th--strictly tentative at this point)
--I liked the "six Es" approach, Education, Engineering, Enforcement, Encouragement, Evaluation and Equity.
--I loved the "let's have a civic goal of getting 25% of all trips in Davis by bike" (in 2000, 13% of all trips were made by bike) (this really forces the issues of encouragement and evaluation)
--It probably *won't* have a capital improvement master list, but this isn't needed for grant purposes for November, so if we can get this version out the door it will free up time and energy to focus specifically on the project list.
FAQ
Q: How does this differ from the 17 other "bike plan meetings" we've had over the last year?"
A: Those meetings were either the Bike Advis. Commis. putting together an [incomplete] plan, short-staffed Public Works staff putting together an [incomplete] plan, of Davis Bicycles! doing our best to put together a plan. This is more of a genuine article, it's both ambitious and comprehensive. (With the one possible issue that's it's more of a policy than a plan, and many of our membership have expressed a strong interest in having place-specific improvements put in a lineup. this plan, apparently has no map and few place-related specifics, but that can, presumably come together between now and November when the next round of grants goes out).
